I've been writing one version or another of this song for twenty-five years.

There came a knight unto the wood
And through the wood he rode
Until he came unto a stream
That through the woodlands wove
And on the river’s other side
He spied a maid so fair
But when he spurred his horse across
The maiden was now a hare

Chorus
Oh tell me, lord, where has she gone
The lady in silver the lady I love
I chased the hart and the fish and the hare
But all I see now is the silver dove

The hare ran swift away from him
So fox’s shape he took
He chased her down the riverbank
And cornered her in a nook
So the hare became a hart
She bounded up the bank
So then the fox became a stag
And pursued on her flank

Oh tell me, lord, where has she gone
The lady in silver the lady I love
I chased the hart and the fish and the hare
But all I see now is the silver dove

The hart dodged through the meadow green
And came upon a mere
Then in a flash of silver scales
Was she now swimming there
So thus the stag become a pike
And plunged into the deep
So that the maiden he could find
And her love he could seek

I chased the hart and the fish and the hare
But all I see now is the silver dove

But one again did she transform
Into a silver dove
So did he then become a hawk
Released from master’s glove
In time she flew into a keep
And he stopped at the door
Took up the shape of man again
Of her father he implored

What do you need me to become
So I may sit at her side
